Why Every Business Needs a Social Conscience (And Why We’re Proud to Support Bristol Suicide Prevention)

There’s more to running a country pub than keeping the glasses full and the Sunday roasts coming. At The Upton, we believe in being a force for good—a place where community matters, and where we all look out for each other, even when life gets tough. As our business grows, so does our commitment; the two go hand in hand.

More Than Just a Pub

We call ourselves “a pub with a hug.” That’s not just about warm welcomes and plates piled high with comfort food. It’s about being there for our neighbours, friends, staff, and regulars when they need it most. Because, let’s be honest, life isn’t always easy—and sometimes the hardest struggles are the ones you never see or hear about.

Did you know that in the UK, around 6,000 people lose their lives to suicide every year? That’s one person every 90 minutes. Behind every number is a story—someone’s friend, parent, colleague, family member, or neighbour. It’s a sobering thought, and one that hits close to home for many of us. I know it does for me.

My own struggles have led me down some very dark paths. While it’s not something I’m always comfortable talking about, I know how important it is to stand up and speak out. It might even save someone’s life—a simple gesture, giving someone the confidence that they, too, can reach out for support. Such a powerful thought.

Our Commitment: Supporting Bristol Suicide Prevention

That’s why we’re proud to support Bristol Suicide Prevention, a local charity doing incredible work right on our doorstep. Their team is there for people in crisis—offering support, a listening ear, and hope when it’s needed most. In 2024 alone, they reached over 1,200 people across Bristol, providing everything from helpline support to community outreach.

Everyone has their own story, and mine is no different. Like many, I’ve experienced the quiet struggle that sits in the background while life goes on. That’s why I feel so strongly about backing this cause. At The Upton, we want to help break the silence, raise awareness, and show that nobody has to face these challenges alone.

Thanks to the support of our local quiz night regulars and a few generous donations along the way, we’ve raised £1,200—soon to be donated to Bristol Suicide Prevention. Thank you to everyone involved.

Why It Matters

Having a social conscience isn’t just good business—it’s the right thing to do. Research shows that businesses supporting local causes see higher staff morale, stronger customer loyalty, and deeper community connections. In fact, 86% of UK consumers say they’re more likely to support businesses that give back to their communities.

And for us, it’s personal. Our staff, our guests, our families—mental health touches everyone, whether we talk about it or not. By supporting Bristol Suicide Prevention, we hope to play a small part in making things better, one conversation at a time.
